Assignment 12
I agree with what the other students say on that this was a difficult assignment. It was hard to find errors or just figure out what needs to be changed or added. This is a great website with lots of information and it is also very professional website. There is always room for improvement however, you can beat yourself up trying to change it all the time because everyone thinks different and wants different things. You can't make everyone happy and it might drive you crazy doing so and it will drive me crazy to find something to nick pick.
Photo Story
Margo and I just finished our DS for our final semester project. I forgot how easy PS3 can be. It does take time to put it together but the software was easy and we both were very happy with our DS. At first, I was wanting to do it on voicethread because it was the last web tool that I used to do a DS. However, one thing I did not consider was that there is a possiblity that voice thread can go down and not exist anymore. What then? All my DS stories would be gone. I am glad that Dr. Robin and I discussed these issue prior to doing the DS and Margo and I then decided to go with PS3.

Podcast and DS
I really enjoyed listening to the different podcast that some of our classmates found. They gave me more of a reason why DS should be used in the classroom and also in patient education. It is a different way to communitcate, to learn by both the author and listener, and to make an impact on one's life. Sometimes, just reading a white and black piece of paper is not enough for someone to remember things. Hearing it, seeing it and experiencing it makes the a fun way to learn.

No DS in Dentistry
One thing that has been frustrating in this class this semester is that it has been very difficult to find articles or examples that DS is being used in the health sciences. I belive it is a great way to educate patients and also to educate students on topics that need more than just a lecture to understand. I myself learn by watching how things are done easier than reading. I hope that having a section on the website for health sciences will be the begining of more DS being used.

A way to express
I read an article/paper on how a student who studied in the US and went back to Canada to use what she learned about DS and how she can use DS as a nurse. She has had several conferences with patient's who have survived breast cancer. Her idea is to compose a variety of DS that survivors can look at. Some of the DS would deal with "What to expect after surgery" ,"What to expect during treatment" and so on. All of the stories would be of actual patients that are going through it or have already finished treatment. I think this is a great service that she can do for her patients. To give them something to watch others in their own situation that could express not only in words but by their own facial expressions of what they are going through. Here DS is used for patient education but also used as a support system.

Digital Storytelling Articles
What Makes a Good Story?by Chris King
http://www.creativekeys.net/StorytellingPower/article1004.html
This particular article was on the same site of one of the other articles I read. Eventhough it is not an article about DS, it is an article about storytelling. Here are 7 tips on how to storytell. Some of these would apply to DS in education and in health education.
A good story is one that touches people in some way.
A good story has to have substance.
A good story needs conflict and resolution.
A good story creates vivid images.
A good story is not “wimpy.
A good story is the story that is perfect for your audience.
A good story is a story that you love and love to tell.

Digital Storytelling Articles
I enjoyed reading the article "Once Upon a Time". It is wonderful to see the other side of how DS would enhance other skills that we need to learn as a young student. We need to learn reading comprehension and writing skills. The added bonus is how to use media/technology to teach and to discover. Great article!
Digital Storytelling Articles
It has been difficult to find articles that are free. I have found two articles that hit home for me. Working in a community clinic, I have many patients that do not read or write. I have a goal to produce many DS to upload to our computers that we will have installed later this spring (I hope). The purpose of this is to give my patients an opportunity to learn about dentistry and how they can improve their own dental care for a better life. Having access to these DS will make an impact on my patients and their families. I believe this would be a wonderful service for both our clinic, for our students who do a rotation to see other ways that we can communicate our knowledge to our patients, and most importantly, to our patients.

Looking for websites for our assignment was not an easy thing to do. I really wanted to focus on dental procdures or patient eduation DS. It was very frustrating not to find them easily and so many website off of google would not actually have examples. They were primarily written information. I am sure if I had a lot of time to browse, I could find some or at least find sites that could lead me to finding some.

Guess What I found?
Margo and I were looking for websites for our discussion and we went to the website...http://tech-head.com/dstory.htm and scrolled down to DS Educational Programs and then clicked on Educational Uses of DS and it took me to our website for this course.
Pretty cool!
